The Mental Health Initiative for South Asians (MHISA) was created to address systemic gaps in mental health access, research, and education for South Asian Americans. Growing the organization from a student-led effort into a national 501(c)(3) organization with 100+ contributors across academia, clinical practice, and community leadership. Today, MHISA supports families nationwide through evidence-based education, strategic resource development, and community interventions.

We have expanded to 5 university chapters, garnered over 400K views on social media, raised over $120K (via crowdfunding, grants, and venture philanthropists), and continue to partner with foundations or other like-minded organizations (eg. Office of the Surgeon General, Kevin Love Fund, university institutions, influencers, ect.).

On a technical front, we work to develop novel resources for our community. Leveraging my background, I designed and deployed an NLP ensemble (TF-IDF + custom RoBERTa-style Transformer) to classify South Asian names, achieving strong PR-AUC and ROC-AUC performance despite severe class imbalance, mixed-ethnicity names, and limited open-source labeled data.

Initially designed for researchers to isolate trends in data relevant to South Asians, this model eventually became the backbone of a national mental health provider discovery pipeline, enabling the identification and verification of 12,000+ South Asian mental health professionals from public datasets. I led the Agile development of a supporting web application (going live soon), translating a complex ML architecture into an accessible and intuitive online resource.

Our database is the largest South Asian mental health provider database in the nation, allowing users to find culturally concordant care anywhere. This is just one example of how we are improving the standards of mental health for our community—with innovation.
